There are two ways to optimize a website. There is on page optimization and off page optimization. Many people off page optimization is more important but this does not mean you should ignore the on page aspects.

Off page optimization involves primarily getting keyword anchor text backlinks, ideally from authority sites. You can do this by writing articles and submitting them to directories with the keyword anchor text link in the signature box. Also you can take part in reciprocal linking and submitting your site to directories. Search Engine Optimization is a continuous process so take it slow and do a little each day and over time you should get good results.
